Stitchbird - Notiomystis cincta (Hihi)

Habitat and Distribution: Common in forests of Little Barrier Island. Recently introduced to Hen and Kapiti Islands.

Characteristics: Male easily recognised as unlike any other species. Female somewhat resembles female Bellbird.

Voice: A high pitched, penetrating 't-zee'. Male has subdued, warbling song.

Food: Nectar from vartiety of flowers, also fruits, insects and grubs.

Breeding: Nest of small rootlets, sticks and fine grasses built in hole in tree. Clutch of 3 or 4 white eggs is laid from October to January and incubated by female for approximately 17 days. Both sexes feed chicks.
