Little Spotted Kiwi Apteryx owenii (Kiwi-pukupuku)

Habitat and Distribution: Little Spotted Kiwi common on Kapiti Island after introductions in 1912. Recently introduced to Hen Islands, Red Mercury Islands, Tiritiri and the Karori Sanctuary – Wellington.

Characteristics: Little Spotted Kiwi recognised by small size and overall grey colour, with mottled and banded dark markings. Females larger than males.

Voice: Little Spotted Kiwi male utters repeated shrill trilling whistle.

Food: Similar to that of Brown Kiwi.

Breeding: Little Spotted Kiwi nests in burrows and beneath tree roots. Incubation period 70-75 days by male.

Captive Program: The LSK held in captivity are at the Otorohanga Kiwi House.
