Great Spotted Kiwi - Apteryx haastii (Roa)

Habitat and Distribution: Great Spotted Kiwi widespread in forests of Northwest Nelson and Paparoa Range. Few sightings in beech forests further south.

Characteristics: Great Spotted Kiwi recognised by large size and overall chestnut tinge, with mottled and banded dark markings. Females larger than males.

Voice: Great Spotted Kiwi gives high pitched vibrating whistle.

Food: Similar to that of Brown Kiwi.

Breeding: Great Spotted Kiwi nests in burrows and beneath tree roots. Incubation period 75-85 days in captivity (not known in wild).

Captive Program: The establishment to hold and display this species in captivity is the Otorohanga Kiwi House.
